About Us

A family-owned business, a Tampere classic, and two cosy cafés. We serve freshly handmade doughnuts on site every day.

A Story Rooted in Family Tradition

Pyynikki’s Munkki has its origins in the 1980s, when Eva Suoste created the original recipe that is still used in our cafés today. After Eva retired, the café was carried forward by her son Jaro and today his wife Karkki continues the story alongside him.

The Pyynikki Legacy of Care and Craft

From generation to generation, the same recipe and the same values have been at the heart of everything we do: handmade doughnuts, caring service and a warm, welcoming atmosphere for every visitor.

What Makes Our Munkki Special?

The Pyynikki Munkki has become a recognisable part of Tampere’s identity, appreciated by locals and visitors for its unique taste.

A Simple, Iconic Treat

Soft, light and fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth and sugar-coated, our doughnuts are often enjoyed in our cafés with Pyynikki coffee, a seasonal drink or a small treat. We also offer options for special dietary needs, including lactose-free, dairy-free, egg-free and gluten-free doughnuts.

Handmade Every Day

Each doughnut is shaped and fried on site every day using the same method our family has cherished for almost 40 years. Our secret lies in carefully selected, high-quality ingredients and a genuine love for the craft.

Pyynikki Observation Tower

A Historic Landmark

Surrounded by peaceful forest trails and lake views, the Pyynikki Observation Tower is one of Tampere’s most iconic spots.A visit to the tower café is the perfect break during a walk, offering warm Munkki, fresh coffee and a unique atmosphere throughout the year.

A Café Rooted in Tradition

Our family café at the base of the tower has been making Munkki for decades. We also serve our own Pyynikki coffee, roasted by Kahwe Roastery and ground fresh for every pot. In summer, an ice-cream kiosk welcomes visitors to enjoy the area outdoors.

Tampere Market Hall

For many years, the atmosphere of the historic Tampere Market Hall inspired the idea of opening a sister café to Pyynikki. That vision became reality in April 2020, when we opened our second location, even as exceptional circumstances in Finland made the moment challenging.

Despite quiet periods during the pandemic, the Market Hall proved to be a natural home for our Munkki. Today, our welcoming café continues its story there, baking each Munkki by hand using the same recipe as at the tower. It offers a warm stop in the heart of the city, surrounded by the unique character of Kauppahalli’s merchants and their everyday rhythm.

Loved by Locals and Visitors

"The views of the city of Tampere from the tower are phenomenal. It only costs 2 Euros to go up. Downstairs you can buy some delicious donuts and take them up to enjoy while admiring the scenery. A lovely place to visit as a couple or with family. [...]"

“A rather low profile structure from outside but with really amazing views from the top. The donut while buying the entry ticket should not be missed - it is one of the tastiest I have ever eaten.”
